What is Classical Christian Education?

Classical Education has stood the test of time, remains quite relevant today, and is one of the most highly sought-after and valued educational programs in the world. It is based on the concept that the overwhelming majority of children, despite learning differences, go through three phases of learning as they progress from childhood to young adulthood.

Grammar Stage: Elementary students acquire knowledge of facts, language conventions, and rules.

Logic Stage: Middle school students eager to take those facts and basic knowledge and compare it with others knowledge through discourse and debate, learn skills in logic and critical thinking.

Rhetoric Stage: High school students build upon the learning that has been acquired at the lower levels and progress to a stage of independent thinking, coupled with a desire for expression of their own ideas and thoughts with others, advocacy, ideas for improvement, and creativity. In order to do this well, there is more emphasis put on effective communication in both its spoken and written form.

 

Together, the Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric Stages form the Trivium which is the core of Classical Christian Education. In Latin, Trivium means “three roads.” 

 

What is the difference between a Classical school and a Classical Christian school?

The answer to that is in the desired end result of the schooling process. A graduate of a secular Classical school would ideally take his or her skills acquired over the years, and become a participant in The Great Discussion and be well-equipped to spend their lives seeking out that which is true, virtuous and beautiful. Similarly, a graduate of a Classical Christian school will also become a participant in The Great Discussion, but will do so knowing that there is such a thing as Truth (with a capital T). ALL truth, beauty, and virtue are His. All ideas, perspectives, philosophies must be viewed with the idea that God has dominion over all that is, ever has been, and ever will be. The Classical Christian education is not a flashlight to find truth, rather a gift to understand Truth.

 

How does the study of Latin benefit a student?

  • Expands and dramatically enhances the student’s English vocabulary

  • Solidifies student’s understanding of the structure of English Grammar

  • Mastery of English results in increased SAT and test scores

  • Latin is the mother tongue of romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, and Romanian)

What defines the curriculum? How might literature selections look different in a classical school? Why is this critical?

  • Great literature is studied, books which have proven themselves by their beauty, depth, and shaping influence

  • By studying the great books, students are learning from the masters

  • Subjects currently include math, science, history, geography, Bible, English grammar, literature, composition, penmanship, spelling, phonics, vocabulary, critical thinking, logic, philosophy, theology, art, and music, plus Latin for 3rd-10th grade. The curriculum follows the Association of Classical Christian Schools guidelines and has been approved by WCA board members and classical education advisors. The curriculum will be examined, expanded on and updated annually.

How does this type of education effect my student after leaving WCA?

  • WCA students are taught to critically think, learn for themselves and be a discerning consumer of knowledge and information.

  • WCA students master the tools they will need to be a productive citizen — comprehensive language (grammar and vocabulary), logical reasoning, and persuasive, eloquent speaking and writing.

  • WCA students have indispensable tools (grammar, logic, and rhetoric) to study and master any subject they choose to pursue.

How does parental involvement look different in a Classical Christian school?

  • WCA partners with our parents and they understand that the school is assisting them to fulfill their responsibility to educate their child as Christ calls us.

  • Parents do not direct the curriculum or classical methods, but their feedback is listened to in order to best understand and educate their child.

  • Parents take their responsibility seriously by guiding their child in reviewing and helping with homework, encouraging them to be self-disciplined and diligent, and supporting teachers and staff.

Are there any objections to a Classical Christian education? What are they and is there any validity to the concerns?

  • For those that have not truly explored the results of this tried and true method, some propose that it is too strict, cold, constrained, and that expectations about academic performance are unrealistic. The truth is that Classical Christian schools are not confined by this thinking. Students learn to be respectful, self-disciplined, and diligent. The bar is set high, academically speaking, because we believe that students will rise to the challenges that we set in front of them given a support system at school, home, and church.

  • Some say that this type of school is just for the academic elite. This is not the case with WCA! WCA maintains a healthy cross-section of the community with common ratios of average and gifted students. Classically trained students perform well on tests because classical teaching methods work and enable students to acquire skill and knowledge. Students also become diligent and develop disciplined study habits which results in superior performance for a lifetime of learning.

  • Some parents believe that as we continue to prepare children for a “global economy” that is increasingly reliant on technology, we need to expose them to, and train them with, the most current technology available. Classical Christian education places far greater importance on teaching children how to think and how to live. The vast majority of employers, graduate schools, and government agencies want people who can think, read and write logically and creatively, and operate with a strong system of morals and ethics.

What can we expect to see regarding WCA’s student to teacher ratio?

  • Small class size is very important to our effectiveness and mission in education. Kindergarten class size is capped at 18 students. First grade is capped at 20 students. Second grade is capped at 22 students. Third through Fifth grades are capped at 24 students.

  • Just as importantly, parents and students will experience the school’s commitment to attracting, retaining, and mentoring a teaching faculty that is distinguished, highly qualified, and passionate about delivering a Classical Christian education. As an institution, we believe that placing a Godly master teacher in each classroom should be one of our very top priorities. Parents will also notice a sharp decrease in the number of classes offered in an online format. It is our belief that teacher lead instruction is of far greater benefit to our students than computer based instruction.
